Hoogendyk Announces Bid for 6th District U.S. Congress Seat
For Release Tuesday, January 17th, noon
Contact: Steve Mobley, 269-420-8309
Kalamazoo - Today, former State Representative Jack Hoogendyk announced his bid for the Republican nomination in the 6th congressional district of Michigan.
“Members of congress and our congressman have spent and regulated us into economic bankruptcy and paralysis. For twenty-five years, this congressman has participated in growing our national debt by nearly $14 trillion. He has voted consistently for budgets that are out of balance and increasing the debt ceiling. He supported government interference into education, energy, and health care.
“It is time we have true constitutional conservatives in Washington, ready to pare down the federal budget and give government back to the people. Most of what congress does is really the responsibility of the states, not the feds”, said Hoogendyk.
“I look forward to raising my right hand next January and taking an oath, not to serve the government or my party, not to cater to the whims of my caucus leadership or the powerful lobbyists. I will swear an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States for the good of my constituents in the 6th district and all Americans.“
Jack Hoogendyk has been a long-time leader for core conservative principles. After serving as National Sales and Marketing Manager with a Fortune 500 company, Jack spent seven years as the Executive Director of a faith-based non-profit organization. In 2000, Jack ran for public office as a limited-government conservative. He was elected to the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners and in 2002, brought those beliefs to the state level as a representative in the Michigan legislature.
During his six years as a state Representative, Jack distinguished himself as a solid conservative. He never voted for a tax increase and was twice named "most conservative" lawmaker in Michigan. He is known for introducing and fighting for key pieces of legislation, including TABOR (taxpayer bill of rights), right-to-work legislation, implementation of a part-time legislature, making English the official state language, and government transparency legislation, requiring all government agencies to post their budgets and spending online. He was one of only four lawmakers (out of 148) to vote against a $1.4 billion spending increase following a $1.5 billion tax increase, which he also voted against.
Hoogendyk is currently President of the Citizens’ Alliance for Life and Liberty, a non-profit organization with a goal to defend and protect the God-given right to life, liberty and property. He also helped lead in the formation of the Michigan Freedom to Work Coalition, working to pass legislation to make Michigan a Labor Freedom state. Under his directorship, MI-Freedom to Work built a web site, blog, newsletter, grass roots list of members which reaches into the thousands, and a donor base. He also worked with legislators to draft bill language for a state Right to Work law.
Hoogendyk resides in Texas Township (Kalamazoo) with Erin, his wife of 35 years, and their youngest son, Benjamin. He is active in his community and church. Jack and Erin also have four married children, Jacob (Jennifer), Isaiah (Elise), Maria (Phil Straatsma), and Caitlin (Kevin Baker) and 10 grandchildren.
