Press Release

Upton Feels the Heat, Sees the Light, Clears Up “Oversight”

Responds to Demands to Co-sponsor “Audit the Fed”

Kalamazoo, MI – On Thursday morning, February 9th, the Hoogendyk campaign issued a Press Release chastising Congressman Fred Upton for being the only Republican from Michigan who failed to sponsor “The Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2011.” By Thursday afternoon, he had signed on.

In an email to a constituent today, one of his staffers acknowledged the Congressman’s “oversight” in missing the opportunity to co-sponsor this very important piece of legislation. As his staffer said in his email today, “As a supporter, it was an oversight that he was not officially signed on as a co-sponsor of H.R. 459, The Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2011.  The oversight was corrected yesterday.”

“Well, I have to give him credit for responding so quickly to my request for him to be a co-sponsor,” said Hoogendyk. “But I do have to ask the question, why did it take him 13 months to recognize this oversight? H.R. 459 was introduced in January of 2011.

“As the bill’s sponsor, Ron Paul said, ‘There is no greater threat to the long-term security and prosperity of the United States today than the out-of-control, secretive Federal Reserve.’ It just seems a little disingenuous that Congressman Upton spent thirteen months overlooking this very important issue and then, suddenly, within hours of my press release, he realized his oversight. How could a twenty-five year veteran of Congress miss something that important for 13 months?”
