Earlier today, I announced that I have taken the Pledge not to support any tax increases as a member of Congress. On Wednesday, February 1st, I signed a pledge not to vote for any tax increases under ANY circumstances.
As someone who signed this pledge every year I was in the state legislature, it was easy for me to continue to take this pledge. I have always resisted the temptation to find more revenue through tax increases while in Lansing, and will continue to do so in Washington.
Along with this pledge not to raise taxes, I also pledged to support the “Tea Party Budget,” a comprehensive document compiled by the Tea Party Debt Commission in cooperation with several tea party groups around the country and FreedomWorks. This budget commits to a balanced budget by 2015, if we start immediately, without raising taxes. It keeps all essential services and constitutional mandates in place and puts us on a clear path to economic stability and prosperity.
As a member of Congress, it is relatively easy to pledge not to raise taxes. Congress can still satisfy their appetite for more government spending by simply printing and borrowing more money. My opponent, Fred Upton, has demonstrated that throughout his 25-year career.
As late as last year, he voted yet again to raise the debt ceiling, which is now above $15 trillion. A pledge not to raise taxes only works if taken in tandem with a commitment not to continue to increase spending and debt. We need leadership in Congress willing to say NO to more spending and growing debt. I am willing to do that; it’s what I did in Lansing and it’s what I will do in Washington.
